Just so sad

I’m not a social media person - at all. I have Instagram and Facebook accounts only because I had to practice with them because I somehow ended up with a job that included managing social media for a real estate company - it’s a long story of surprises and ironies.

Anyway, because I was interested in social media only as a business tool, I never followed anyone or looked at anyone else’s account so I had no idea what Randy posted. But when he died I took over his computer and found a Word doc of text for Instagram posts. One of them led me to his account where he had posted this photo with this text:

The cute girl in front row, middle, holding up the sign, lived in the same trailer park that Ian lived in. She had moved to Sunnyvale from East Palo Alto the year before this photo was taken. I was crazy about her and thought about her all the time, but never said a word to her until high school when we walked past each other and said “hi.”

We never saw each other again until our 20-year class reunion. She came up to me and told me she heard I had a crush on her, which she had heard from some friend of Sam’s (see Sam above). Twenty-seven years after this photo was taken, we got married. And I still think about her all the time.

I’m a huge Tom Petty fan, and I was reminded of this lyric: You wreck me, baby/ Yeah, you break me in two/Oh and you move me, honey/ Yes you do
